“Acjachmen Cultural Revitalization & Youth Documentation Project”
The Acjachemen are representative of the myriad of ethnic groups found along the California coast. The Blas Aguilar Adobe Museum and Acjachemen Center museum fosters the preservation and continuity of the tribe’s cultural patrimony. Funding for the Acjachemen Cultural Revitalization Project supported a cultural revitalization project highlighted by nine monthly tribal workshops, led by traditional cultural practitioner Domingo Belardes. The project promoted community vitality, building community understanding between the land and cultural activities, and giving tribal members ownership of stories, histories and culture.
The monthly workshops included instruction in the fabrication of traditional tools, gourd rattles, jewelry, and baskets. Tribal members worked with willow, tule, sedge, shells, deer, rabbit, and coyote skins. The group traveled to the 10,000 year old Acjachemen village and sacred site, Panhe; to Casper Wilderness Park for an ethnobotany workshop; and studied Acjachemen astronomy. Youth documentarians filmed each workshop, conducted interviews with tribal leaders and elders, and edited footage to create 3 trailers and several short films.
“These gifts demonstrate strong tribal interest in creating a powerful funding engine for protecting and preserving Native art and culture—the very cornerstones of tribal sovereignty. A foundation of this nature will help reverse the long history of government suppression of Native culture done as part of the United States' assimilation program. Through gifts of this nature, Indian Country can direct its resources to protect what is closest to home to all Indian tribes—our own cultures."
“The act of giving was part of the ‘gifting economy’ of the Northwest where one’s wealth was measured by generosity, good work and a good heart. That is the work of philanthropy too: It’s an honor to have plenty and to share. There is no lack when you have this process in place and the most important mindset to have while participating is gratitude, or giving thanks and promising to care for all, no matter what.”
